Linear Motion Transducer

 Description

The Model 290 Series of Linear Motion Transducers combine a rectilinear potentiometer with an integral solid state signal conditioning circuit. The combination of these two features affords an economical means of monitoring a position feedback control signal with a minimum number of components. The heart of the unit features the same high accuracy conductive plastic resistance element featured in our standard line of Rectilinear Potentiometers.

This potentiometer provides a voltage to the internal signal conditioning circuit which yields an amplified analog output signal that is directly proportional to shaft movement. Available output options include 3-wire voltage outputs rated, 0 to 5, 1 to 5 or 0 to 10 Vdc. Also available is a 2-wire 4 to 20 mAdc process output. Electrical strokes are available from 1 to 12 inches in 1 inch increments. The output function can be specified as either forward acting (where the output signal increases as the shaft extends) or reverse acting (were the output signal decreases as the shaft extends).

The unit is designed for single supply operation in an industrial control environment and does not require a bipolar DC supply to function. The power supply input is protected from damage due to an accidental reverse polarity connection. It will accept a wide range of input voltages from 7.5 to 30 Vdc depending on the output configuration. The power supply is internally regulated so that the output signal is virtually unaffected by variations in the supply voltage. Additionally, multiple units can operate from a single source of supply with no reduction in performance.

The Model 290 can functionally replace most LVDT or magnetostrictive linear displacement sensors with comparable performance at a much lower cost. Due to a lack of magnetic components in the design, the performance of the Model 290 does not suffer from the presence of stray electromagnetic fields.

Some typical applications include analog position feedback sensing for PLCs, a linear motion or gauging transducer for data acquisition systems or any linear actuation that must be accurately monitored or displayed.
